Ah, the scrumptious jar of $25 miracle hair mask that never seems to last!

We’ve all had these moments when we’ve been literally scraping the last remains out of the jar to nourish our desperate crispy tresses.

In my case, I have this problem almost every 2 weeks.

See, I have a thick head of abundant curls that can slurp a whole jar in no time. And if I carry on at this rate, the dang thing will break my bank!

As much as I love pampering myself with these deliciously-rich and decadent hair masques, I figured out I had to find alternative ways to treat my hair to avoid ending up broke.

So, I reached into my pantry to do some experiments concocting DIY dupes.

And guess what?

Although they are not as neat and tidy as the real thing, they’ve been pretty good at solving all my hair woes.

So let me show you my tried and tested DIY hair mask recipes you can use to nourish and invigorate your hair at home.

Mayonnaise Hair Mask For Optimum Moisture

Okay, today’s mayo won’t be used for your BLT.

Instead, we’ll use it to restore moisture into your curls.

This 3 ingredient mask will leave your hair so hydrated and silky smooth; you won’t be able to keep your hands off your tresses. I came up with this recipe a couple of years ago, and it’s my absolute go-to mask for when my curls are parched.

I only do it once a month, and it keeps my hair perfectly balanced for a while.

The Science Behind it:

Mayonnaise is one of the best moisturizing ingredients you can put into your hair. The egg whites in mayo provide an abundance of protein which helps protect against breakage, and the oils moisturize the heck out of your hair. The egg yolk is where most of the protein in an egg is found, so adding that to the proteins in mayo is highly nourishing. The added olive oil brings the moisture element to the next level in this mask.

What You’ll Need:

If you have VERY thick hair, I recommend doubling the recipe.

  • 3/4 cup mayo
  • 3 egg yolks
  • 2 tbsp. olive oil
  • Bowl and mixing utensil

Step 1:

Add all of the above ingredients into a bowl and mix until thoroughly combined.

Step 2:

Part your hair into fourths and work the mask into dry hair, ensuring that all of your hair gets fully covered.

Step 3:

Repeat on the remaining sections until you look like Jack Frost.

Step 4:

If you have any mask leftover, go back and apply it to your ends (a.k.a. the thirstiest part of your hair!)

Step 5:

Put your hair up in a bun and leave the mask in for 45 mins to an hour (or longer if you have the time), wash it out, and enjoy your bouncy and moisturized curls!

Mask To Help Repair Heat Damage

Heat damage is something that I have struggled with in the past and something that I know so many others struggle with as well.

This next mask is perfect for repairing damaged curls and consists of only two ingredients: coconut oil and honey.

The Science Behind It:

Coconut oil is excellent for reducing breakage and protecting your hair from protein loss. Honey is an emollient, which means it helps to restore moisture into the damaged areas of your hair.

This will increase your hair’s strength, overall health, and aids in protecting against breakage and damage. Hand in hand, these simple ingredients effectively repair damaged areas and enhance your hair’s overall health.

What You’ll need:

  • 1/2 cup melted coconut oil
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • Saucepan
  • Heat-safe bowl

Step 1:

Add oil and honey to the saucepan.

Step 2:

Turn heat on low/medium and constantly stir until ingredients are just melted and combined.

Step 3:

Remove mask from heat and pour into a heat-safe bowl.

Step 4:

Let it cool for a minute or two, but not too long, or the oil will solidify.

Step 5:

Once cooled enough, apply the mask from the midsection of your dry hair to the roots.

Step 6:

After covering all of the areas, put your hair into a bun and let the mask sit for 1 hour.

Step 7:

Wash the mask out and enjoy the results!

Hair Mask For Growth!

Speaking from experience, growing out curly hair is a testing and lengthy process. Anything I could get my hands on that promote hair growth was put to the test, especially when it came to products.

I tried countless growth oils and serums, and even when using these products weekly, I never found them to produce any remarkable results. When I tell you this next hair mask is heaven-sent, I mean it!

Best of all, there are only 3 things necessary: rice, water, and consistency.

I know you may be questioning the benefits of rice, but trust me – It works.

The Science Behind It:

Rice water for hair growth goes back hundreds of years to China. This technique originated where women would use it to maintain and grow their 2m long hair! Rice contains inositol, an ingredient that can heal damaged hair and treat it from the inside out.

What You’ll Need:

  • 1/2 cup uncooked rice (any kind of rice, preferably organic)
  • 2-3 cups water
  • Jar/Bowl
  • Spray Bottle

Step 1:

Rinse and strain your rice to get rid of impurities.

Step 2:

Put your clean rice into your bowl or jar.

Step 3:

Add your water and let the rice soak for at least a few hours, up to 24 hours.

Step 4:

After letting your rice soak, strain once more and save the water it has been soaking in.

Step 5:

Spray your dry hair with the rice water until it is all fully saturated.

Step 6:

Put hair up and leave the rice water in for about an hour.

Step 7:

Before washing the rice water out, massage the scalp for 5-10 minutes.

Step 8:

Wash out and enjoy the results!

Mask For a Dry Scalp

A dry scalp is something that nobody likes to deal with on their day-to-day.

Countless products claim to help get rid of a dry scalp, and while those products are usually effective at doing so, they tend to be a little pricey.

Homemade alternatives are perfect for achieving the same results without having to spend a dime! This next mask I’m going to share is for getting rid of a dry and flaky scalp with only a few ingredients.

The Science Behind It:

For starters, bananas are rich in natural oils, vitamins, and potassium, all of which restore nutrients. Yogurt is full of proteins and a mild exfoliant that can help remove the dead skin off the scalp when rinsing, which is perfect for eliminating any dead skin. Aloe Vera is a very well-known ingredient and is known for its health benefits for hair and skin. Aloe contains proteolytic enzymes that repair dead skin cells on your scalp – perfect for helping cure a dry scalp.

Step 2:

Apply the mask to dry hair, making sure to cover all of your scalp and as much of your hair as you can.

Step 3:

Put your hair up and let the mask sit for 1 hour.

Step 4:

After about an hour, rinse out and enjoy!

Mask To Tame Frizzy Curls

Last but certainly not least, we tackle the issue of frizzy hair.

For some, it is a style, but for most, it is a daily battle.

The fight against frizz has always been and will forever be an eternal struggle… but there is a mask that can combat the vicious and seemingly untamable beast referred to as a bad hair day. Key word “seemingly” which brings me to share with you what precisely this mask consists of.

The Science Behind It:

This hair mask is loaded up with everything necessary to tame your wild curls.

Egg whites are a great source of protein and nutrients to promote healthier hair, and avocado has many benefits. One being that it is loaded with somethings called monounsaturated fatty acids, and these acids help with giving your hair hydration and shine as well as strengthening hair follicles. The added olive oil will really help define those curls by adding body and shine.

What You’ll Need (double recipe for thick hair):

  • 2 egg whites
  • 1/2 of an avocado
  • 1 Tbsp. olive oil
  • Blender
  • Bowl

Step 1:

Add all of your ingredients into your blender and blend until relatively smooth (careful not to blend at high speed or for too long because the egg whites will become whipped).

Step 2:

Split your hair into 4 sections and apply the mask to each section.

Step 3:

Put your hair up and wait for 45 minutes – 1 hour.

Step 4:

After the time is up, you are ready to rinse. (make sure to rinse the mask out using warm water, NOT HOT WATER, or else you will end up with scrambled eggs in your hair… I may or may not have made this mistake).

Step 5:

Style as desired, and enjoy!

Wrapping Up

No more having to do the walk of shame when returning from the store back to your car, knowing you shouldn’t have bought the mask, but you absolutely needed it!

You have all the ingredients to keep your hair happy and healthy at home.
