Finding the best dandruff shampoo for African American hair can be a real challenge.
Yes my natural hair looks vibrant, beautiful, and full of bounce, but maintenance is so demanding!
Plus, I can’t use just any shampoo.
Now, this is a little embarrassing, but I’m going to share it with you anyway.
I have dandruff.
Not just an occasional flake here or there either.
I’m talking heavy dandruff which seems to collect in piles on my shoulders.
So I don’t just need a shampoo.
I need an anti dandruff shampoo that works for my fragile African American hair. A shampoo that works with my type 3 hair and won’t dry the hell out of my scalp.
Truth is, I’ve always had a love hate relationship with shampoos.
But after trying so many brands …
I found something that works for my dry and flaky scalp and my annoying afro hair dandruff.
And the best part ?
It doesn’t strip my hair from its natural oils.
Does that sound too good to be true ?
I thought so, too.
But this shampoo STOPS dandruff, SOOTHES my itchy scalp, and NOURISHES my natural hair.
And when I find a hair care product I like, I’ll stick with it for years.
I’ll tell all of my friends about it too!
So get ready friends, because I’m about to show you the shampoo I’ve been using to keep my hair clean, moisturized, and dandruff free.
I’ve absolutely fallen in love with the Shea Moisture Dandruff Control Shampoo.
Where do I even start ?

A Quick Look At The Shea Moisture Brand
First, let’s take a look at the people behind the brand.
I’m a big believer in understanding who I’m buying beauty products from. Instead of some faceless corporation, I definitely prefer to purchase from people who care.
Shea Moisture originally started way back in 1912. A 19-year-old lady named Sofi Trucker sold her handmade hair and skin products across Sierra Leone.
Today her grandchildren run the business with the same commitment to simple, effective ingredients.
They use only natural and safely sourced ingredients. Plus, they use the same basic recipes which have been passed down for generations.
I don’t know about you, but I appreciate soaps and shampoos where the list of ingredients doesn’t contain a bunch of super-long chemical names.
Everything in this shampoo is certified organic and cruelty-free, too.
Now, would I use this shampoo if it was loaded with harsh chemicals?
I’m not going to lie. I’d consider doing so if the amazing effects were still the same.
Fortunately, that’s a non-issue. Because I can use this natural dandruff shampoo with a 100% clear conscience. Nothing but goodness here.
It’s by far the best organic shampoo for dandruff I’ve used.
What’s In The Shampoo ?
The Shea Moisture African Black Soap Shampoo has simple ingredients you’re probably already familiar with.
- Shea Butter
- African Black Soap
- Tea Tree Oil
- And Willow Bark Extract
Just as important, let’s take a look at what the shampoo doesn’t contain.
- No Sulfates
- No Parabens
- No Phthalates
- No Paraffin
- No Mineral Oil
- No Petroleum
- No Formaldehyde
- No Propylene
It’s a sulfate free clarifying shampoo for African American hair.
And that’s the most important thing I look for in my shampoos.
Sulfates are a heavy cleaning agents. Not to gross you out, but sulfates are used in detergents and household cleaners !
They are in a lot of shampoos too, where they’re used to create lather. While shampoos will only contain a small amount of sulfates, this cleaning agent can still damage your hair.
My advice ?
Stop using any shampoos or conditioners which contain sulfates. You’ll notice a positive change in the strength and health of your hair when you switch to a sulfate free dandruff shampoo.

Okay, so this can be a little confusing.
While the anti dandruff shampoo and conditioner combo works amazingly well on African American hair …
“African Black Soap” has nothing to do with African American people specifically.
Instead, Black Soap is a special type of soap made from the ash of Shea tree bark, plantain, cocoa pods and other plants.
The leaves and bark are sun-dried and roasted in a pot at an even temperature. Shea butter, palm oil and other natural ingredients are added. Then the mixture cures for two weeks where it turns into soap.
Most black soap is made by women in West Africa, although this particular shampoo is made in the United States.
Black soap contains a high concentration of Shea butter, Vitamin A, Vitamin E and iron. Also known as the anti dandruff soap, it adds moisture and protection to your hair and scalp naturally.
Be careful if you have extreme sensitivity to caffeine. You might experience some itchiness and irritation if you use black soap. But otherwise you should be fine.
In fact, you’ll probably be much more than fine.
The Benefits of Shea Butter
Shea butter has some incredible benefits for your hair and scalp.
First, it moisturizes your hair, ensuring a soft, smooth texture. Plus, Shea butter also helps to repair already damaged hair. There’s no chemical buildup, either.
What’s good for your hair is also good for your skin. Shea butter helps hydrate and soothe your itchy scalp. Regular use combats dandruff, eczema, dermatitis and other scalp problems. It’s also an effective anti fungal shampoo.
The Shea Moisture dandruff shampoo treatment is super effective on African American hair.
And here’s why …
While Dandruff and skin health go hand-in-hand, eliminating flakes requires treatment at the source of the problem – the scalp.
This shampoo works by cleansing your scalp to remove dead skin cells and all the impurities that encourage bacteria to grow.

How to Use Shea Moisture African Black Soap Shampoo
Don’t worry. I’m not here to tell you how to wash your hair. You probably already have a pretty good idea of how to do that.
But I do want to talk about the frequency of use. Many people are confused about how often they should wash their hair.
There’s no real answer. Let your hair be a guide. Personally, I wash my hair every three days. I can probably go as many as four days between washes if I really want to.
Because the shampoo is so moisturizing on its own, I only use the conditioner on an as-needed basis.
African American women and men face unique hair care challenges.
But Shea Moisture African Black Soap Dandruff Control Shampoo provides true solutions.
Regular use helps repair breakage, eliminates dandruff, and strengthens your hair from the core.
I’ve tried many (too many) hair care products and I can safely say this is the best dandruff shampoo for African American hair that works from day one.
